Below is a list of the most commonly asked questions - if you can’t find an answer here, then send us a quick email and we’ll try and answer you as soon as possible.

  • What benefits are there to membership?
    Membership with BCW starts at £30 a year and includes: Unlimited Tool Borrowing: Borrow up to 10 items at once from the Brighton Tool Library, absolutely free Exclusive Workshop Discounts: Receive up to 50% off on exciting maker sessions and workshops! Discounted rates on using our maker space workshop and all the machinery within it for your own projects (£5 for half a day)
  • How much is it to join?
    Our standard membership prices are £30 a year-- bargain!
  • Where can I buy membership?
    You can either visit our shop to sign up in-person, or do it online here.
  • Do memberships auto-renew?
    By default memberships auto-renew. You can check the auto-renew box when signing up to disable auto-renewal. You will receive reminder emails when your membership is due or about to expire. We encourage all our members to continue to support us through an annual membership subscription. Your support helps to keep a valuable community resource going for everyone and ensures that we’ll have what you need when you need us.
  • How do I cancel my membership?
    Disable the auto-renew payment function for your Tool Library account within our MyTurn inventory management system.
  • Where is the Tool Library?
    The Brighton Tool Library is in the Brighton Community Workshop in Kemptown Village, Brighton.   • When can I collect tools?
    Any time the Brighton Community Workshop is open. As this is volunteer-run, the schedules can vary-- the best way to get up to date information is to join our WhatsApp group. Pop in to speak to us about it and get an invite to the group.
  • What if I return the tools late?
    Tools returned late may mean that others who are waiting (and may have reserved their turn to use that specific tool) misses out. Please returning tools on time - if you can’t please email The Tool Library team. ​ Tools will be charged a late fee at our discretion-- currently set to £1 a day.
  • Where can I see what tools are available?
    You can browse our inventory here. Members can login, browse and reserve items here.
  • How many tools can I reserve?
    You can reserve up to 10 items at one time. Additional items may be provided with your tool such as goggles, gloves or tool accessories, but will not be included in your tool count. NOTE: Batteries for cordless tools are counted as a separate items and will need to be booked individually per cordless device.
  • How do I reserve tools?
    1. Log in to your Brighton Tool Library account 2. Begin a cart 3. Choose a day to pick-up 4. Choose a time to collect 5. Browse the Inventory 6. Review your selection 7. Click ‘Submit Reservation' ​ We will email you to confirm receipt of your reservation order. ​ We will email you to confirm your reservation is ready for collection.
  • How do I cancel a tool reservation?
    Please cancel your order as soon as possible via your Brighton Tool Library account. You can also email us at admin@bcw.org.uk
  • Can I renew the tools I am borrowing?
    Tools can be renewed up to 2 times per loan before it must be returned, however we do reserve the right to recall the tool early if the demand for it is high. To renew your tool, log in to your account, locate the tool your want to renew, and click the renew button. If the renew option is unavailable then the renewal limit for that item has been reached and it will need to be returned.
  • Will you provide PPE?
    We do not currently have inventory to supply PPE, but once we find a reputable supplier we intend to sell (at cost to members) protective gloves, safety glasses and ear defenders, so that everyone has access to their own Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Will you offer other supplies (screws, nails, adhesives, etc)?
    Please do ask on pickup as we may have what you are looking for available as a one-off. We do not currently have inventory to supply incidentals, but once we find a reputable supplier we intend to sell basic fixings, such as screws, nails etc and adhesives, abrasives, cleaners and possibly some paint (at cost to members).​ We encourage all members to make use of local specialist providers for these items. In the future, we anticipate building relationships with and negotiating member discounts with local independent hardware stores.
